This seminar features Valerie Schutte and her research presentation: “Into the handes of the ragged beare”: John Dudley, Duke of Northumberland, in the Accession Literature of Queen Mary I. In her presentation, Dr Schutte explores how John Dudley, Duke of Northumberland was written about in the popular broadsides, ballads, and pamphlets that were produced to celebrate Queen Mary I’ accession. Dr Schutte's presentation will be followed by a discussion with Dr Joanne Paul about the Dudley family.

Valerie Schutte earned her Ph.D. in History from the University of Akron. She is author of Mary I and the Art of Book Dedications: Royal Women, Power, and Persuasion (2015). She has edited or co-edited four collections on topics such as Mary I, Shakespeare, and queenship. She has published articles on Shakespeare, royal Tudor women, and book dedications. Her second monograph on Princesses Mary and Elizabeth Tudor and gift books will be published with ARC Humanities Press in 2021 and she is writing a biography of Anne of Cleves.
