Overview

Royal progresses have often been considered from the viewpoint of the travelling court and the impact that the monarchy had on regional areas. This paper, however, aims to reverse this traditional approach by embracing a bottom-up perspective to consider how the inhabitants within areas visited by royalty were complicit in shaping their own identities. Many historians, including Linda Colley, have argued that over the course of the eighteenth century a unionised British identity was emerging, of which the monarchy was an important element. Whilst monarchy was a uniting component, royal visits, however, presented the opportunity for the locality and its inhabitants to present specifically regional or sub-national identities. Using case studies of the royal tours of George IV to Dublin and Edinburgh in 1821 and 1822 respectively, this paper explores how these trips facilitated the expressions of sub-national identities; that is to say, explicitly Irish or Scottish ones rather than British.
